Théo Pourchaire can finally leave Formula 2 in peace. After battling for four seasons, the Sauber Academy driver has triumphed in Formula 2, winning the championship ahead of Frederik Vesti.

The race of Theo Pourchaire was very strategic with a strong competitiveness on his part. He finishes the race in 5th place, thus earning two points. His direct competitor, Frederik Vesti, finished the race in 3rd place. The Frenchman closes the championship with a 16-point lead over the Dane, becoming the third Frenchman to triumph in this category. “I am so happy!” he exclaimed after his triumph. “I am so tired. I gave it my all. I struggled in qualifying (14th) and it made the rest of the weekend difficult. You can see me suffer from time to time, but I never give up! I wanted this title so much and also the one for the team. I am proud of everyone.”

Consistency paid off

The French driver only won one race this season. However, he displayed an almost exemplary consistency, allowing him to win this title. Throughout the championship, he only retired twice. Additionally, he finished only two races below the ten-point mark.

After a few disappointments in F3 and then in F2, Théo Pourchaire is very happy to have finally been able to take his revenge and win a title. “In 2020, I was just 3 points away from the F3 title, I was young and it really hurt because I wanted to win,” he said on Canal +. “I was close, I could have beaten Piastri who is now a Formula 1 driver and still drives really well. He finished 3rd in qualifying yesterday, so I know him very well, and seeing him progress faster than me… and then I struggled a bit in Formula 2, even though, as I said, I did well in F3 and F2, but I needed that title, I wanted it so badly. We worked so hard, so it feels so good and it’s only natural that I wanted to let it all out because I’ve wanted to do this for a long time.”

Pourchaire thanks the French enthusiasm

After his success, Théo Pourchaire wanted to thank the French public. « It’s huge to have an F2 title in France, and on top of that, we are champions, the team is champion, rookie champions with Victor Martins », stated the 20-year-old Frenchman. « So honestly, we couldn’t be better, I think, in France in Formula 2, so there you go, I’m super happy. Thank you to my team, thank you to Sauber Academy, thank you to everyone, my family. »

At the end of this season, Théo Pourchaire will not be able to renew another season in Formula 2. The two seats at Sauber in F1 are already taken for 2024, so the Frenchman will have to find another category. Liam Lawson, who was in a similar situation, had chosen to compete in the Super Formula series in 2023.
