Mexico City ePrix 2024: Pascal Wehrlein first winner of the season
At the end of a race controlled almost from start to finish, the Porsche driver emerged victorious for the opening of the 10th Formula 1 season.

Here we go for Season 10 of Formula E! The 22 championship single-seaters have started off in Mexico for a championship that will take them to all corners of the world until next July for the grand finale planned in London.
For this season opener, it was the German Pascal Wehrlein who triumphed at the wheel of his Porsche 99X Electric Gen3. The former Mahindra driver particularly enjoys the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez as he had already claimed victory there in Season 8 and finished second last year.
Starting from pole position, Wehrlein had a perfect start in front of Sébastien Buemi’s Envision and Maximilian Günther’s Maserati. A few laps later, the race became lively in the middle of the pack. Back at ABT, who was celebrating their 100th Formula E race, Lucas di Grassi fell victim to a brake issue and ended up in the wall. One lap later, Nico Müller’s other ABT car was caught in an overly optimistic overtaking attempt by Antonio Felix Da Costa.
While the Attack Mode strategies are being implemented, leading to a brief change in leader in favor of Buemi, it is Swiss teammate Robin Frijns who will be responsible for the appearance of the safety car. Returning to Envision this season, the Dutchman went off track while trying to overtake Edoardo Mortara’s Mahindra at the exit of the Stadium.
Just over 20 laps remain to be completed. The front-runners take advantage of this opportunity to use their second Attack Mode. It’s at this moment that Wehrlein makes his move to secure his position and race towards victory. The battle is fierce for the podium spots, and if Günther can’t hold onto his place, it ultimately goes to Nick Cassidy. Mitch Evans had to fight against Jean-Eric Vergne to stay in the Top 5. Behind the wheel of his DS Penske, the Frenchman falls just four tenths of a second behind the New Zealander’s Jaguar.
One must look further to find traces of the reigning champion Jake Dennis and the comeback of Nyck de Vries. The Andretti driver finished 9th, one place ahead of his new teammate, Frenchman Norman Nato. As for the Dutchman, he had a difficult race in the second half of the pack, finishing in 15th place, two positions behind Edoardo Mortara’s other Mahindra.
The championship standings are the same as those of the first race, with Wehrlein first ahead of Buemi, Cassidy, Günther, and Evans. With 28 points (25 for the win and 3 for the pole position), the Porsche driver has started this new season perfectly.
