WEC: the list of entrants for the 24 Hours of Le Mans revealed

The Automobile Club de l'Ouest presented on Friday the official list of the 62 entries for the 2020 24 Hours of Le Mans. No major surprises to note. A second Rebellion will indeed be part of it, as well as Corvette, four Porsches, and three Ferraris in GT.

6 LMP1, 11 GTE-Pro, 24 LMP2, and 21 GTE-Am: here is the composition of the 62 entrants in the 88th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, on June 13 and 14, 2020. The official list was unveiled on Friday by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, the organizer of the event. In LMP1, the presence of Toyota, Ginetta, and two Rebellion as expected is noted. In GTE-Pro, the usual WEC competitors (Porsche, Aston Martin, Ferrari AF Corse) are joined by cars from the North American championship, two Corvettes, two Porsches, and the Ferrari from Risi Competizione. This was anticipated. Notable is the presence of an “innovative car” or 56th entry, with the SRT 41 and the Frédéric Sausset initiative. The driver became the first quadruple amputee to complete the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2016. He then created a structure to allow disabled individuals to participate in car racing.

How is the list formed?

The list of entries for the 24 Hours of Le Mans is formed in several stages.

First step: the WEC. All competitors registered for the year in the World Endurance Championship are automatically entered into the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as the race is part of the championship. There are 32 this year. It should be noted that according to the regulations, teams that have two LMP1 cars in the regular season can add a third one for the 24 Hours. No one is doing so this year.

Second step: the invitations. 16 invitations in total are awarded as a reward for results in various championships related to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In chronological order, four teams, one per category, are invited due to their success at the 2019 24 Hours of Le Mans (Toyota, Alpine, AF Corse, Project One). This year, it happens that they are all in WEC. Then, five competitors from the European Le Mans Series are added, invited in LMP2 or GTE-Am. A GTE-Am invitation is also given to the winner of the Michelin Le Mans Cup in GT3. Then IMSA, organizer of the North American championship, invites two teams of their choice, one in LMP2 and one in GTE-AM. Finally, four crews are invited based on their results in the Asian Le Mans Series.

Third stage: the selection. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the only international race in the world that selects competitors without a direct link to the results. 14 teams are selected by the ACO, based on criteria of prestige, loyalty to the 24 Hours, and different championships, among others. A total of 75 entry requests were received. Those not selected are placed on a reserve list.
