The centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans was eventful. Many incidents took place on the track. Ferrari finally returned after 50 years of absence in the Sarthe. In the LMP2 category, it was the Inter Europol Racing team that came out on top. But the race could have turned into a nightmare for one of its drivers.

An early injury in the race

During the first laps of the race, during the first pit stop under safety car, Fabio Scherer, Swiss driver, gets his foot run over by the victorious Corvette in the GTE Am category. After fifteen minutes of racing, the Swiss driver is injured. However, this did not prevent him from keeping his position and finishing the race.

Fabio Scherer therefore drove in his prototype with a severely injured foot, likely with multiple fractures. But nothing stopped the team from achieving their first endurance victory. Furthermore, it was a very solid performance, especially under challenging conditions.

I think that tomorrow, my foot will not be well. I didn’t want to check the actual condition of my foot because it would have disturbed me in my race. At first, naturally, it bothered me. I had to change my way of braking by using my whole leg and not just my foot. It was painful, especially after the relays, Fabio Scherer said.

A communication issue

The injury happened at the worst possible moment, but the Swiss did not want to ruin the intense preparation done by his team for this legendary race. Fabio Scherer forgot the pain, erased by the adrenaline. A method that worked since Inter Europol triumphed in LMP2.

We had to fight against almost factory teams. We were good in all conditions, especially in the second and third relays. That’s when we made the difference. I was more worried about the slow zones and safety cars, that’s what had made us lose in Portimao, said the Swiss.

This problem was not the only one that affected the Polish team in their quest for the title at Le Mans. After only a few hours, communication became complicated as the car’s radio was cut off and no longer functioning. It was just another challenge that was overcome. As in the past, a sign was used to indicate information.
