In the deep end. Pascal Wehrlein will make his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans next June. The German has just been confirmed by Porsche for the world’s greatest endurance race. The current Formula E driver will compete in the top category, the Hypercar.

Indeed, the Stuttgart brand announced that he would be at the wheel of the 963. It is quite logical to rely on the skills of the Formula E factory team for Porsche Penske’s third participation at Le Mans, explains Thomas Laudenbach, vice president of Porsche Motorsport. Pascal Wehrlein has fully convinced us with his performance in testing and his participation in the 24 Hours of Daytona. As the current Formula E world champion, he has earned the right to make his debut at Le Mans at the wheel of a Porsche 963.

« Racing for Porsche Penske Motorsport at Le Mans is a dream come true. I am looking forward to this major challenge because, unlike in Formula E, I have to share everything: position, settings, strategy, etc. Of course, I want to add more major titles to my World Formula E Championship crown, but my main goal is to do a good job for the team and learn as much as possible. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity », enthuses Pascal Wehrlein.

In addition to the official announcement of the former Sauber Formula 1 driver, Porsche has unveiled the lineup of its three Hypercar teams. Car #4 will be entrusted to Felipe Nasr, Nick Tandy, and Pascal Wehrlein. Car #5 will be in the hands of Julien Andlauer, Michael Christensen, and Mathieu Jaminet. The #6, reigning world champion, will be driven by Matt Campbell, Kévin Estre, and Laurens Vanthoor. Finally, the #99 of Proton Competition will consist of the trio Neel Jani, Nico Pino, Nico Varrone.

António Félix da Costa, the German’s teammate, will also be participating in June. The Portuguese driver is about to make his seventh start at Le Mans. “I am very happy to return to Le Mans after a year away,” comments the 33-year-old driver. “During my last participation in LMP2, I won the category. That’s my goal again this year. I can’t wait to get going alongside my teammates in June.” He will once again be behind the wheel of an LMP2, but the name of his team has not yet been revealed.
