« Indianapolis, a city of 879,293 inhabitants, and Le Mans share a strong identity and a history that is part of the legend of global motorsport. » With these words, Stéphane Le Foll, mayor of Le Mans, announced that the two cities would soon be twinned, as reported by France Bleu.

The announcement was made during the latest city council meeting, on Thursday, March 27. The two municipalities were already somewhat connected — the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit features a corner named after the American city, located in the state of Indiana.

According to France Bleu, a formal charter will be signed during the 24 Hours of Le Mans this June. The charter will outline the objectives of the partnership: exchanges between city representatives, specialists from various areas of urban life, scientists and engineers, artists and writers, artistic groups, youth, athletes; as well as pen-pal programs between student groups and schools.

« This partnership is not just a symbolic link between two cities with a deep love of racing, but also a framework to encourage cultural, educational, and economic exchanges that will bring lasting benefits to our communities. »

Sophie Moisy, deputy mayor of Le Mans in charge of the city’s influence, twinning partnerships, and heritage, is expected to travel to Indianapolis this May to attend the Indy 500. Beyond attending the race, her mission will be to strengthen ties between the two cities and officially establish the partnership.
