The British Grand Prix has become the first F1 race weekend to host Sprint Qualifying. These consist of a 100-kilometer race that determines the starting grid for the main race on Sunday. In this inaugural short race, it was Max Verstappen who crossed the line first and therefore secured the pole position.

The aim of this new format is to reinvigorate the race weekends by including more highlights and suspenseful moments. In order to test this new format, F1 wanted to organize it over three different weekends. The second Qualifying Sprint will take place on Ferrari’s home turf, during the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

This Thursday, F1 unveiled in a statement the schedule for the race weekend in Italy. Just like in Silverstone, Friday will consist of a practice session and qualifying (Q1, Q2, Q3) that will determine the starting grid for the Sprint Qualifying (18 laps) on Saturday. The second day will also include a practice session. Finally, the race (53 laps) will take place, as usual, on Sunday.

The schedule of the Italian Grand Prix.

Date Séance Horaire
1 Vendredi Essais Libres 1 14h30-15h30
2 Qualifications 18h00-19h00
3 Samedi Essais Libres 2 12h00-13h00
4 Qualifs Sprint 16h30-17h00

If F1 has confirmed that the second Sprint Qualifying will indeed take place in Monza, the third weekend has still not been revealed, but it should take place outside Europe.

If Sao Paulo was mentioned, the F1 management nevertheless wished that the Sprint Qualifying would not disrupt the championship battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, so that the world title would not be decided on Saturday.
