Toto Wolff will do everything to ensure that Bottas has a great future
As Mercedes will have to choose between George Russell and Valtteri Bottas this summer, Toto Wolff assured that he would do everything possible to ensure that the Finn finds the best possible seat if he were to leave the team.
This is the decision that many people are waiting for. Who will be Lewis Hamilton’s teammate next year? Bottas or Russell? While the British driver has been delivering incredible performances with Williams lately, #77 once again demonstrated, over the weekend, his loyalty to Mercedes by letting his team leader pass to claim victory.
As the battle rages on to recover the second Silver Arrow, Toto Wolff assured, after the British Grand Prix, that if Bottas were to leave Mercedes, he would do everything possible to ensure he has a great future.
If we were to arrive at a situation where we wanted to try someone else, then it is not only my relationship with him but also [my] responsibility that he has a great future. Because he deserves it,” said the director of Mercedes.
The Austrian also specified that the choice of the second driver for 2022 will be made based on a strategic decision of the team.
« Valtteri has checked all the boxes that we needed to understand, not only recently but also before. It is more of a strategic decision to stick with the current line-up or to become bolder next year.
« But we are going to sit down with the drivers, with both – because George is a Mercedes driver – then discuss and make a decision. », he added.
Mercedes specified earlier in the season that the announcement regarding the identity of the second driver next year will be revealed in the summer.
