Bottas’s accident will not influence Toto Wolff’s decision for 2022
Toto Wolff (Mercedes) assures that the accident caused by Bottas during the Hungarian Grand Prix will not influence the decision regarding his seat in 2022. Russell is still waiting.

Valtteri Bottas’s season is not going as planned. And for good reason, the Finn is only fourth in the drivers’ standings, 87 points behind his teammate, behind Lando Norris with his McLaren. At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Bottas suffered his third retirement of the season by causing a collision at the first corner. The Mercedes driver, however, apologized and assumed his mistake regarding the incident. He even received a five-place grid penalty for the race in Belgium. Nonetheless, Bottas acknowledges that the first part of his season has been complicated.
« Her season did not unfold as I wanted. At least in the last races, I felt like it was slightly positive with a few podiums and more points. But I have three DNFs, which is important in terms of points. It’s not great.
Nothing is going well for Bottas, who sees his future at Mercedes uncertain. George Russell is rumored to replace him next season. However, Toto Wolff, the director of the Mercedes team, ensures that the accident caused by his driver in Hungary has no impact on the choice of drivers for the 2022 season.
« The mistake was unfortunate with major consequences. He was sandwiched between the two cars in front of him. He lost support and it was already too late. It will not influence the decision at all. »
Mercedes should quickly make a decision between Bottas and Russell. The Finn has still not won a race this year, while the Williams driver has just scored his first points in Hungary.
