Is Sergio Perez ready to stay at Red Bull in 2022?

Sergio Perez’s first season at Red Bull has been challenging. The Mexican driver is currently holding only the fifth position in the drivers’ standings, but is only four points behind his direct competitor, Valtteri Bottas. Despite experiencing several frustrating moments during these eleven races, he still managed to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Perez appreciates the way Helmut Marko, the team manager, works with him and his honesty, regardless of his performance. In an interview with Motorsport, the driver admits that honesty is an important point in a team. “When I have a bad race, he will simply tell me and he will always tell you exactly what he thinks. It’s something good for someone with my experience and with my career in Formula 1. It’s good to have someone who tells you straight away what they think, no matter where you are.”

In addition to Marko, the Mexican can count on the support of his entire management since the beginning of the season. With Red Bull, there is no restraint. They are quite transparent with myself and with the media, which is good. The importance for Perez is the final result of the weekend. By achieving a good race, he can only be happy to go home. The most important thing is that I am happy and satisfied to go home. I am a very hungry driver and I see living with myself.

A good relationship with Verstappen

Even though the gap between the two teammates is significant, Perez declared having a good relationship with Verstappen. The two drivers are able to compete with Mercedes together. “I have good relations with him on and off the track. We are able to share our views regularly. The problems I talk about, he probably doesn’t find the same, so we drive differently. We move the team forward together.” Formula 1 will resume soon with the Belgian Grand Prix and it will be the turn of the Austrian team to be in the position of chasing Mercedes. Perez will have to show much more in trying to achieve consistent results with his team.

For the third consecutive season, Red Bull has decided to change its second driver alongside Max Verstappen. Instead of taking a young driver from its academy, like Pierre Gasly or Alex Albon, the Austrian team turned to the experienced Sergio Perez. Last year, the driver made a strong impression at the wheel of Racing Point, even securing a prestigious victory in Bahrain.

The beginning of his adventure at Red Bull was a bit difficult. Perez struggled to adapt to the characteristics of his new car. However, the driver made up for it and scored important points, including a first place in Baku. Christian Horner, the team principal, is rather satisfied with the level displayed by his new driver. Sergio Perez played the role we were hoping for. You saw him in Baku when he won a race the day he was able to put pressure on Hamilton. He scored points and played the team game as he did during the French GP. He is an excellent team player and we are very happy with the work he is doing.

Gasly will have to wait for his turn.

For now, there is no question of bringing Pierre Gasly back to the main team despite his good performances at AlphaTauri. The Frenchman still wants to return to the main team. He will have to be patient. If Horner does not see the interest in changing things for now, he still does not close the door to the Normand: « Pierre Gasly is doing a fantastic job at AlphaTauri and is still a Red Bull racing driver. So we are in a good position. »
