This season, the FIA requires teams to provide two free practice sessions for young drivers during the season. In Barcelona, Williams decided to offer their first of the two free practice sessions to Nyck de Vries.

Champion of F2 in 2019, the Dutch driver was unable to secure a seat in F1 for the 2020 season, despite the regulation prohibiting the F2 champion from returning to the F1 feeder series. De Vries then turned his attention to Formula E, where he became the reigning world champion in the category with the Mercedes team last season.

He will replace Alex Albon behind the wheel of the FW44 this Friday, possibly with the goal of comparing his performance with that of Nicholas Latifi who, despite rumors of departure during the season, has been confirmed by his manager Jost Capito himself.

Firstly, I would really like to thank Williams for the opportunity to drive in FP1. It’s great for me to get to know the team and drive the FW44, and also to go out on the track during a Formula 1 weekend. […] I am really looking forward to the experience in Spain now. said de Vries.
