This season, two new race directors have taken up their positions: Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas. If Freitas will officiate for the first time this weekend in Barcelona, Wittich has already had five races to enforce his rules. Among all his decisions, the one regarding jewelry and fireproof clothing is creating a lot of buzz in the paddock and beyond.

While Sebastian Vettel and especially Lewis Hamilton have protested this simple safety reminder, Pierre Gasly, on the other hand, is requesting a direct conversation with the FIA and believes there is too much commotion over a matter that seemed already settled. « It’s more about having an open discussion about what could be done, as I think ultimately it’s a rather minor issue. We’re making a big deal out of it, but I believe it’s a matter of common sense. »

« It has been going on for 70 years. Obviously, there have been many changes compared to last year, but suddenly, there are a lot of changes in regulations and how everything is controlled. But as pilots, we all agree that we would like more communication on what we think is fair, what they think is fair, and finding a compromise.

Asked about equality between drivers on this matter, especially in comparison to Lewis Hamilton, Pierre Gasly believes that the question concerns everyone. « I think it’s a general topic for all of us. Obviously, I have my own beliefs, others have theirs. Others may want to wear jewelry for different reasons. That’s my own feeling and my own point of view. Obviously, Lewis also has his own point of view. »

The discussion about wearing jewelry could continue in the upcoming Grand Prix, as Lewis Hamilton, among others, has until the Monaco Grand Prix to comply with the rules.
