Lewis Hamilton is experiencing a more challenging start to the season than usual. He is less comfortable than his teammate George Russell with the more temperamental W13 than his previous rides. His best result so far has been a third place in Bahrain during the opening race, greatly aided by the retirement of both Red Bull drivers.

It’s his only podium in seven races. Results that are far from the standards to which Hamilton had accustomed us, especially because the car does not allow him to in this early stage of the new era.

His former teammate from 2010 to 2012 at McLaren, Jenson Button, believes that Lewis Hamilton is not accustomed to driving a car that is so challenging, which doesn’t help him perform, unlike George Russell.

« I think the big change for Lewis is that he’s driving a car that is not competitive in his world,” said the 2009 world champion. « He has been fighting for the world championship since 2014 and his teammate, the young George Russell, has arrived and he has been competitive. Because George drives a car that is really better than what he was used to [at Williams], it gives him confidence and he can push a little more. While Lewis probably doesn’t have as much confidence in the car to be able to extract the maximum from it.

But for Button, Hamilton hasn’t lost his driving skills and can come back at any time if he really wants to. When you have a few bad races, it hurts mentally. It’s a mental sport. It’s not just physical. Lewis, as we all know, is one of the best in the world, if not the best in the world, at driving a Formula 1 car. He will be competitive again if he wants to be. Maybe he thinks his career is over and wants to leave and do something else. Who knows? But Lewis, if he has a good enough car to win, he will win races.

The seven-time world champion recently declared that he has no intention of leaving Formula 1 for the moment. It is up to him and Mercedes to prove that his compatriot was not mistaken in his judgment!
