The photographer injured in the Monaco accident recounts what he experienced
The photographer who had been hit during the first lap accident of the Monaco Grand Prix has spoken out and recounted the frightening moment he experienced. However, he claims to not "be afraid to return to a circuit".

Andrea Bruno Diodato, a 29-year-old independent photographer who works in sports and entertainment, narrowly avoided serious injuries during the Monaco Grand Prix. He found himself in close proximity to the huge first lap crash involving Sergio Perez, Kevin Magnussen, and Nico Hülkenberg.
My work sometimes teaches us to listen before even seeing certain situations, he told Sky Italia. And so in those moments: after a Sauber passed, the uniform noise of the cars passing was as if it had stopped for a moment and I understood that something was going to happen. Then the collision.
« There were about ten of us, now I only have one bruise after the impact. Those who suffered the most damage may have thrown themselves to the ground to take cover.
« I was there because I was using a wide-angle lens at first. I wanted to show a bit of the surrounding context, so the city, the details of the track, and the large number of cars. In short, it was an interesting part to work on.
After examining the incident, the photographer refused to blame the drivers responsible for the accident. “If I put myself in the pilot’s shoes, I must say that in a way, I understand Magnussen,” he said.
« In a race where it is very difficult to overtake, it may be in this situation that he saw the only glimmer of opportunity to succeed. I don’t want to accuse him or condemn him. »
Despite this incident, he is already back at work this weekend. “No worries,” explained the photographer. “To the point that I immediately returned to the track and will also be on track this weekend at Mugello for the MotoGP.”
« In Monaco, there is no security issue. I know this circuit well, and if there were no serious consequences after the impact, it is also because the guardrails are very solid, as are the poles in the asphalt. I think this track offers much more certainty compared to others and other situations. I am thinking, for example, of the accident involving Zhou (with Albon) at Silverstone in 2022. »
« Maybe the show is not thrilling on the track, but safety standards are high. And anyway, we are all aware that there is a risk in doing this job. »
