Adrian Newey, the architect of Aston Martin’s F1 revival

Since March 2025, Adrian Newey has joined Aston Martin as technical director and shareholder. This strategic recruitment aims to propel the British team to the top of Formula 1, particularly in view of the new regulations in 2026.

Known for his unconventional approach, Newey prefers working in the workshop to formal meetings. Andy Cowell, CEO and team director of Aston Martin, described his way of working. He doesn’t attend meetings, he doesn’t respond to emails, he just builds a fast car, and we all support that process.

Installed in an office equipped with a simple whiteboard, Newey works closely with engineers to design the future 2026 car. His direct involvement in the design phase is seen as a major asset for Aston Martin.

Objective 2026: A Competitive Car

The 2025 season looks challenging for Aston Martin. Despite high ambitions, the results are not forthcoming: Fernando Alonso, a mainstay of the team, has yet to score a single point this year, expressing his frustration multiple times over the lack of competitiveness of the car.

The arrival of the engineer is part of a long-term strategy, as the new 2026 technical regulations and the engine partnership with Honda offer a unique opportunity to start afresh. « We are pushing, growing, implementing new tools, and a very large organization », said Cowell, illustrating Aston Martin’s total commitment to this renewal.

A promising collaboration

The collaboration between Newey and Alonso is seen as a key element of the project. A strategic meeting was recently held in Silverstone to align visions on the future car. The common desire to build a competitive team in the medium term is clear.

With Newey’s expertise, combined with Lawrence Stroll’s massive investments in infrastructure, such as the new factory and the recently commissioned wind tunnel, Aston Martin aims to position itself among the contenders for world titles in the coming years.
