Liam Lawson had started 2025 at the top of the charts, racing for Red Bull and fulfilling his childhood dream. But very quickly, the team realized he wasn’t up to the challenge, and that his poor results couldn’t solely be explained by the comparison with Verstappen. Thus, after only two Grand Prix, Helmut Marko decided to swap him with Yuki Tsunoda, who already seems more comfortable with the RB21.

A familiar return, but still not convincing

Even though he now races for Racing Bulls, a team he is already familiar with and with less pressure, the New Zealander still hasn’t scored any points, and his results suffer in comparison to Isack Hadjar.

Montoya admitted that if he doesn’t make progress, they might replace him. For this reason, Juan Pablo Montoya would not be surprised if Arvid Lindblad, the new gem of the Red Bull stable, took his place.

« Last year, Liam showed that he had the necessary qualities to stay in Formula 1, he earned his seat. But if he doesn’t improve over the course of the year, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him replaced by Lindblad », the former driver told AS.

A delicate mental situation

Montoya believes that the situation at Red Bull is very complicated and that it has affected Lawson’s confidence.

« She has probably weakened her internal security. He might need psychological support. »

He concludes: « The parent team is already ready to look elsewhere, because that’s how it operates. »
