Kimi Antonelli: « I want to be the best, not just a good driver »
At just 18 years of age, Kimi Antonelli has arrived at Mercedes Formula 1 with an extraordinary level of determination. At the press conference in Imola, the young Italian prodigy outlined his ambitions, his preparation and the inspiration he drew from his illustrious predecessor, Lewis Hamilton.

At 18, Kimi Antonelli is one of the most anticipated rookies of the 2025 Formula 1 season. As a Mercedes driver alongside George Russell, he succeeds Lewis Hamilton, who has moved to Ferrari. During the press conference on Friday, May 16, Antonelli expressed his ambitions and vision for this new stage of his career.
“I want to be the best, not just a good driver,” said Antonelli.
A meticulous preparation
Before joining F1, Antonelli racked up titles in Formula Regional and Formula 2, notably securing a historic pole victory in the Miami Sprint. However, he acknowledges that the W16, Mercedes’ single-seater, presents unique challenges.
« The W16 is quite different from what I have been able to test », he admitted.
This awareness highlights the complexity of the transition between the lower categories and Formula 1.
The support of Lewis Hamilton
A highlight of the week was Antonelli receiving a handwritten letter from Lewis Hamilton, his predecessor at Mercedes. This gesture deeply moved the young Italian.
« It says a lot about the person he is. Reading this message filled my heart », he confided.
This letter, now displayed in his room, serves as a source of inspiration and motivation for Antonelli.
A season full of promise
With already a podium in Formula 2 and impressive performances in testing, Antonelli is determined to prove his worth in F1. He knows that the road will be full of obstacles, but he is ready to take on the challenges.
“I want to be the best, not just a good driver,” reiterated Antonelli, thus highlighting his high ambitions for his first season in Formula 1.
