Fernando Alonso: between loyalty to Aston Martin and uncertainty about his future in F1

As the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix looms on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Fernando Alonso, recently appointed ambassador for the Catalan track, has expressed his doubts about continuing his Formula 1 career beyond 2026. Despite an extended contract with Aston Martin until that date, the two-time world champion sees his future on a day-to-day basis, depending on his motivation and performance.

In April 2024, Alonso signed a contract extension with Aston Martin, binding him to the team until the end of the 2026 season. This contract also includes a clause allowing him to remain involved with the team beyond his driving career, in a role yet to be defined. The Spaniard stated: “This is the longest contract I have ever signed in my career. So it’s something that will keep me connected to Aston for many years.”

This decision was influenced by several factors, including the arrival of Adrian Newey as technical director and the partnership with Honda starting in 2026. Alonso emphasized: « I absolutely wanted to race this year and next year because of the regulation change, and I wanted to experience the 2026 regulations and Honda’s arrival in the team ».

Doubts about the continuation of his career after 2026

Despite this commitment, Alonso remains cautious about his future as a driver. He stated: “I don’t know if I will race in 2027. For now, my contract only runs until 2026 for driving, even though I have a long-term agreement with Aston Martin F1. I will decide next year.”

The Spaniard insists that he does not want to compromise the team by continuing to race without being certain of his motivation and performance. He added: « I don’t want to compromise the team. If I don’t feel fast enough, I’ll be the first to raise my hand ».

Ambassador of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

In parallel, Alonso has been named ambassador of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, strengthening his link with the track where he has enjoyed numerous successes. He expressed his attachment: “It’s a special circuit for me, where I have experienced unforgettable moments with the Spanish fans.”

This role comes at a crucial moment, as the future of the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona is uncertain due to the possible arrival of a race in Madrid starting in 2026. Alonso hopes that the Barcelona circuit will continue to host F1: « I hope the circuit continues, and I’m sure of it ».

A future to define

At 43, Fernando Alonso remains one of the most experienced and respected drivers in the paddock. His commitment to Aston Martin and his role as ambassador for the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya reflect his passion for the sport. However, his future as a driver beyond 2026 will depend on his motivation and ability to remain competitive. Regardless, Alonso seems determined to stay involved in the world of Formula 1, whether behind the wheel or in another role.
