FIA in Japan to promote innovation in mobility and the growth of motor sport
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, is visiting Japan this week to strengthen partnerships in the fields of sustainable mobility and motor sport. A strategic visit to a country renowned for its technological advances and passion for motor sport.

A driving force for global mobility. The president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), Mohammed Ben Sulayem, is embarking on an official visit to Japan to emphasize the country’s central role in the evolution of global mobility, automotive innovation, and motorsport development.
The trip illustrates the FIA’s desire to work hand in hand with manufacturers (OEM), governments, mobility clubs, and national sporting authorities (ASN). Objective: to advance sustainable mobility and inclusive growth in motorsports.
Technological innovation and sports enthusiasm
Japan, a leading industrial and technological power, is establishing itself as a global leader in the fields of public transport, smart city development, research on alternative fuels, and MaaS (Mobility as a Service) platforms. In 2023, the Japan Mobility Show attracted more than 1.25 million visitors, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and cross-sector cooperation.
On the sports side, enthusiasm remains strong: the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) now counts over 200,000 active license holders in motorsport, a 20% increase over five years. The Formula 1 Grand Prix in Suzuka also recorded its highest attendance rate since 2006 this year.
A busy and strategic agenda
During his visit, Mohammed Ben Sulayem will meet several key figures of the Japanese government, including Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Koji Murofushi (Commissioner of the Japan Sports Agency), and Hiromasa Nakano (Minister of Transport and Infrastructure).
Invited by the JAF, he will also visit the Japanese urban circuit (City Circuit) and the JAF control tower, symbols of the country’s investments in sports infrastructure and urban racing concepts.
« Japan remains a model of technological leadership in the automotive industry, a nation passionate about motorsport and a key player in innovative mobility solutions that enhance the lives of citizens, said Ben Sulayem. « This visit is an opportunity to strengthen our ties and align our common goals for the benefit of the global community. »
Global vision and local anchoring
This visit is part of a broader vision of the FIA: to encourage innovation, safety, and sustainability on a global scale, while promoting accessibility to motorsport. With its strong industry, government commitment, and sporting heritage, Japan stands out as a prime partner to realize these ambitions.
