FIA: head of sustainability and diversity dismissed in controversial restructuring
The FIA has dismissed its Head of Sustainability, Diversity and Inclusion as part of a restructuring.

Sara Mariana will officially leave the governing body of Formula 1 this Friday, her position having been eliminated as part of structural changes.
A controversial restructuring
The FIA claims that this reorganization will allow its teams responsible for sustainability, diversity, and inclusion to function in a more agile and efficient manner.
This decision is part of a broader review of the FIA’s internal structure. Sara Mariana had 18 months to develop a new sustainability strategy, a strategy that ultimately never materialized.
In a statement, the FIA said it is extremely grateful to Sara for her hard work and for leading this team since 2023, adding that it has taken the necessary measures to fully support her in this transition.
Alberto Villareal, CEO of the FIA, added: « The decision to reorganize our Sustainable Development and Diversity & Inclusion service was made after careful consideration by the leadership team in order to strengthen our ability to act in these two crucial areas. »
The FIA has an important role to play in promoting sustainable practices in motorsport and mobility, and in providing concrete tools to its member clubs. By connecting more with our members on topics such as sustainable fuels, smart cities, and diversity in sport, we can have a stronger impact.
« By continuing to streamline our internal operations and improve our systems and processes, we are confident that this structural change will enable us to better serve all our stakeholders. »
Sara Mariana criticizes the FIA upon her departure
According to BBC Sport, Sara Mariana wrote a message in which she appears to criticize the FIA leadership: « There is a life outside the FIA. A life where talent and commitment are rewarded. Where women in positions of responsibility can thrive, feel valued, and respected.»
« Unfortunately, it’s time to say goodbye. I loved this adventure, I savored every minute. »
« I loved the tremendous work we accomplished and the incredibly talented team I worked with. I did not expect such a sudden end, but life goes on », she declares.
