Max Verstappen very close to joining Mercedes
Sky Sport Italia reports that Toto Wolff has received a positive response from Max Verstappen to join the team in 2026.

Would this transfer be more significant than Lewis Hamilton’s to Ferrari? Probably. For many months, rumors have been circulating about discussions between Mercedes and Max Verstappen. These have been reignited in recent days and have now reached a peak.
According to Sky Sport Italia, the four-time world champion has reportedly agreed to join Mercedes and the Silver Arrows in 2026. He would replace George Russell, who will be at the end of his contract with the star-branded firm.
However, according to the Italian media, the Mercedes board of directors has not yet definitively approved the arrival of the Dutchman and would first like to know more about the 2026 car.
Of course, there is no confirmation from the various people involved. As a reminder, George Russell had let the cat out of the bag in recent days, he who is negotiating an extension with the German brand. He is currently the team’s number one driver.
One year after Lewis Hamilton’s departure, Mercedes could acquire another renowned driver. Especially since, according to initial speculations, the next silver car would be very efficient. It should also not be forgotten that Aston Martin has made a more than enticing offer to the Dutchman.
