It was tough but he did it! Mick Schumacher overcame the challenges to win the Formula 2 Champion title, two years after the one he won in Formula 3, both with Prema.

And yet, nothing has been simple for him on the road to the crown. Indeed, starting 3rd on the grid, Schumacher launches well and is in a battle with Dan Ticktum (DAMS) when at turn 4, the young German lights up his tires and creates a huge flat spot.

If he fights for a while for the podium, the Prema driver sees his title rival Callum Ilott (UNI Virtuosi) putting pressure on him. His tires deteriorate very quickly, and after letting Ilott and his teammate Shwartzman go, “Schumi Jr” stopped at the pits on the 20th lap to put on soft tires and start again from the back.

Regardless of the outcome, we are champions.

The scenario is simple: Schumacher is crowned in all cases except if Ilott wins or if the latter finishes second with the fastest lap. However, Ilott does not catch up with the leading duo and his pace even deteriorates. The British driver, in distress, finished his race in 10th place and thus offered the title to Schumacher.

« I am a bit overwhelmed right now, it will take a few days. I’m just very happy and grateful,” declared the new champion at the end of the race. « No matter the result of this race, we are champions and that is what people will remember.”

Mick Schumacher, 18th, will have thus experienced two very complicated last races in Formula 2 but ultimately snatches the crown from an Ilott who will not have disappointed.

For your information, the son of the legend Michael Schumacher will make his debut in the Premier category next year at the wheel of Haas.

The victory in this last race of the season went to Jehan Daruvala (Carlin) ahead of his teammate Yuki Tsunoda, who thus secured his Super License, and Dan Ticktum. It is worth noting the excellent 6th place of the Frenchman Giuliano Alesi, who concludes his tough 2020 season in a great way.
