The British engineer Ross Brawn, who led Ferrari to victory in his day, has been the subject of much attention in recent weeks, with the release of his book revealing what was going on behind the scenes during his gentle ousting from Mercedes, and rumors of a possible return to F1, but probably not in the place one might have imagined.

Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button made the most of their single-seaters today, finishing 11th and 13th, which will give them the opportunity to choose their starting tires and have a different strategy to try and score points to consolidate their sixth place in the Constructors' Championship.

The Williams cars of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa both made it into the top 10 - in 8th and 9th positions - giving themselves the advantage of starting ahead of one of the two Force Indias in the person of Sergio Perez - 12th - with the aim of retaking 4th place in the Constructors' Championship.

Building on the momentum of his start to the weekend, Lewis Hamilton added another pole position to his already impressive list of honours - the 59th of his career - ahead of Nico Rosberg, who had been struggling until then, and Max Verstappen, who had been solid since FP3. By the way, it's the 12th front row for the Silver Arrows this season.

In contrast to last weekend, the Red Bulls seemed to be in less good shape, finding it more difficult to find the optimum set-up on the high altitude Hermanos Rodriguez circuit. Plagued by oversteer, understeer and brake problems, the Austrian drivers got off to a timid start.

Weekends come and go, some with victories, others with problems. However, the morning session didn't get off to such a bad start for Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutierrez, the other regional contenders at this Grand Prix in Mexico.

Sergio Perez and Nico Hülkenberg confirmed the good form of the Indian single-seater on the Mexican driver's home turf. They are now the 4th force on the grid, and hope to extend their lead over the Williams team.

Ferrari's drivers started their Mexican weekend on a much more positive note than last week in Austin. Out in front in both practice sessions, and even having the luxury of beating Lewis Hamilton - by 4 thousandths - in super-tendres in FP2 with Sebastian Vettel, it was a day with a glimmer of hope for the men from Maranello.

Track temperature played a major role on this first day. But that didn't stop Mercedes from topping the timesheets, with Lewis Hamilton just as comfortable on a fresh track with little grip as on a warmer one. Nico Rosberg, on the other hand, proved to be more of a handful on the track that saw him triumph in 2015, more than four tenths down at the end of the day.

Nico Hülkenberg's arrival at Renault has started the countdown for drivers looking to secure a starting berth or secure their place. Jolyon Palmer is sure to agree that the pressure is mounting. Kvyat's retention at Toro Rosso came as a surprise, and further restricted the number of places available for 2017. Those places are up for grabs at Force India, Haas, Renault, Manor and Sauber, and the rumors are flying. Marcus Ericsson could well see himself behind the wheel of Force India.
