Since the start of the season, the Sauber team has been relegated to the bottom of the standings with no points scored, outstripped even by the Manor team. But this was without counting on a slight upturn in performance towards the end of the season, and the incredible weather conditions in Brazil, which enabled the 20th Grand Prix of the season to secure 9th place and the 2 points that go with it, thanks to local hero Felipe Nasr.

After his disappointing finish at the Mexican Grand Prix, Romain Grosjean pulled off a tour de force to reach Q3 and, more importantly, grab 7th place on the grid. The Frenchman is quite simply the first of the non-Mercedes-Red Bull-Ferrari drivers. Esteban Gutiérrez, meanwhile, qualified in 12th position.

The two Red Bull drivers didn't manage to close the gap on the Mercedes and were even edged out by Scuderia Ferrari, taking 4th and 6th positions on the grid, with Max Verstappen in a better position than Daniel Ricciardo. But the two Milton Keynes team-mates won't be going away beaten, and are hoping for an interesting race accompanied by rain.

Still battling it out with Williams, Vijay Mallya's men finally had the last word in Brazilian qualifying, taking 8th and 9th positions, with Hülkenberg ahead of Pérez. The drivers from Grove were outside the Top 10, in 11th (Bottas) and 13th (Massa).

After a Friday afternoon plagued by mechanical problems - water pressure for Fernando Alonso and high exhaust temperatures for Jenson Button - the McLaren team found the resources to take a fine 10th place, thanks to the Spanish driver. Jenson Button failed to finish in Q1.
