Red Bull has decided to demote Liam Lawson and replace him with his former teammate at Racing Bulls, Yuki Tsunoda, with immediate effect, just two races into the 2025 F1 season.

Yuki Tsunoda will become Max Verstappen’s fifth teammate since 2018 and will make his debut with Red Bull at next weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, his home race.

An expected promotion

The 24-year-old Japanese driver had initially been left out of a Red Bull seat three months ago, when Liam Lawson was chosen over him to replace Sergio Perez.

But the Japanese driver has finally been given the long-awaited opportunity with the senior Red Bull team after spending more than four seasons at Racing Bulls, where Liam Lawson will now return for the remainder of the season.

In a video shared on social media by Racing Bulls, Yuki Tsunoda said: « Hi everyone, it’s Yuki! I just wanted to say a massive thank you to the team and the amazing VCARB fans for this incredible journey and so many unforgettable memories. I’m staying in the Red Bull family, so I won’t be far. See you in the paddock. »

In another video where he is wearing his new Red Bull suit, Yuki Tsunoda added: « I can’t wait to race my home Grand Prix with Red Bull Racing. »

Racing Bulls proud of Yuki Tsunoda

Racing Bulls team principal Laurent Mekies expressed his pride in Yuki Tsunoda after his departure from the Faenza-based team.

« We are extremely proud of Yuki and his well-deserved promotion to Oracle Red Bull Racing! His progress last year, and more recently at the start of 2025, has been simply outstanding. On both a personal and team level, it has been a tremendous privilege to witness that development, whether in Faenza or in Milton Keynes, » he said.

« Yuki’s energy and positivity lit up every corner of our factories and garage, and he will always be part of the Racing Bulls family! We wish him all the success he deserves at ORBR. »

The director of Red Bull’s sister team also spoke about the return of the New Zealander to the squad. « Everyone at VCARB is looking forward to working hard with Liam to give him the best possible environment so he can shine at the wheel of our car and show the talent we all know he has. »

« He fitted in perfectly last year, and we’re excited to challenge ourselves and grow together as a team. With Isack already starting strong with us, we know we have a young and solid driver pairing, » he concluded.
