Starting 16th and 17th respectively, the two Force India drivers were counting heavily on their race pace and good strategy to climb up the order. The two cars from the Indian team finished 12th and 13th, just outside the points.

Grouped performance at Mercedes GP. Like last year, Michael Schumacher finishes ahead of his young teammate. The seven-time world champion had a rocket start from 10th position on the grid to get ahead of Rosberg. Both Mercedes GP drivers stayed wheel to wheel throughout the race. Nico Rosberg enjoyed his duel with his teammate, even though a problem with his DRS didn't allow him to attack as hard as he would have liked.

Team Lotus takes a lot of positives from its Spanish weekend. Kovalainen's 15th position in qualifying showed that the team is heading in the right direction. In the race, both drivers demonstrated a good pace on soft tires before slowing down a little on the hard compounds. Unfortunately, Kovalainen ended his race in the gravel trap but remains positive for the rest of the season.

After his problem during free practice this morning, Nick Heidfeld was unable to take part in the qualifications for this Spanish Grand Prix. Even more unfortunate since the R31 seems competitive on this circuit, judging by Vitaly Petrov's sixth position, who is satisfied with his lap in Q3.

Mercedes GP primarily focused on tomorrow's race during this qualifying session. Rosberg and Schumacher have saved a set of soft tires for tomorrow and hope to achieve a good result. The seven-time world champion will have strategy options since he didn't set a time in Q3, so he could choose to start on hard tires tomorrow.

Team Lotus aimed for Q2 with the new package brought for this Spanish Grand Prix, and it was achieved with Heikki Kovalainen placing his T128 in 15th position ahead of the two Force India cars. Joy is obviously present in Tony Fernandes' camp, even though Jarno Trulli could undoubtedly have hoped for better than an 18th place without an electrical issue at the start of the session.

Like many other teams, Williams brought a number of new parts for this Spanish round. Both drivers of the English team are satisfied with this new package, although data still needs to be analyzed to improve performance and best prepare for the race.

For once, Mark Webber takes the lead position at Red Bull on the Barcelona track. The Australian already claimed victory here last year and hopes to repeat this good result on Sunday. For this Spanish Grand Prix, Team Lotus has introduced a significant number of updates to its T128. The main one being a blown diffuser, which is equipped by the majority of teams on the grid. The objective was to get closer to the mid-field teams like Force India and Toro Rosso.
At the end of this first day, it seems that the new package from the Malaysian team is working as expected. Heikki Kovalainen finished both of the day's sessions about four-tenths behind his competitors.
