Toto Wolff believes that five teams will be able to compete for the win in 2024
F1. The CEO of Mercedes believes that the budget cap will reduce the gap between teams in the short term.
This is one of the major decisions that has been made by the FIA. Since last year, all teams are limited to 130.5 million euros per season. While some teams have to tighten their belts, this is not the case for others who are below this limit.
The measure was taken by the global governing body of motorsports to attempt to reduce the gap between the top teams and those at the back of the pack.
According to Toto Wolff, this limit could have beneficial effects within two years. « It is too early to judge. I think the budget cap will reduce the group. In two years, we will have five teams that will be able to win, and later, we will have three others, indicated the Austrian to our colleagues at La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The man who brought Mercedes to the top of the world eight years in a row claims that McLaren will have caught up by 2024. He believes that budget constraints are causing the team based in Woking to fall behind. « Everything you spend to improve the car in one season, or for making mistakes, should not be used to develop the new car. »
For the moment, Toto Wolff is quite far from reality since Ferrari and Red Bull are the only two teams that have crossed the finish line first. However, in the past few races, Mercedes has been gradually catching up with the performance deficit from the beginning of the season, and McLaren obtained a podium finish at the start of the season.
